Remember the twin golden rules of hitchhiking? # 1: Don't go hitchhiking, because the driver who picks you up could be certifiably crazy. # 2: Don't pick up hitchhikers, because the traveler you pick up could be raving nutcase. So what if, on some dark, isolated road, Crazy #1 offered a ride to Nutcase #2? When two of the most twisted minds in the world of horror fiction face off, the result is SERIAL, a terrifying tale of hitchhiking gone terribly wrong. Like a deeply twisted version of an "After School Special," SERIAL is the single most persuasive public service announcement on the hazards of free car rides. Beyond a thrilling piece of horrifying suspense, SERIAL is also a groundbreaking experiment in literary collaboration. Kilborn wrote the first part. Crouch wrote the second. And they wrote the third together over email in 100-word exchanges, not aware of each other's opening section. All bets were off, and may the best psycho win.

 "What a surprise" 2009-07-02
By Karen Shirey (Lawton, OK)
I downloaded this since it was a free Kindle book. Usually these are interesting reads. This was really a surprise, not at all what I was expecting....really good, very twisted. A must read if you dare.

I usually never write a review for anything but rely on other people's opinions for my own choices. Since I liked it so much I needed to give my opinion! I will first say it is a quick read. Second-I th0ught it was clever and well written. I throughly enjoyed it all. I turned the pages quickly and at the end found myself wanting more. If you are someone that does not enjoy a good thriller to put some scare into you-don't bother but if you do-READ THIS SHORtT BOOK!

"No Redeeming Value, But That's a Good Thing" 2009-06-29
By John R. Davis (Grand Isle, Vermont)
Certainly this is not literature. You'll find no Hemingways, Stokers, or Mailers here. And yes, this book has absolutely no redeeming significance whatsoever. But that doesn't leave it without some value: A quick read, it can be read in one sitting. It can be downloaded free on Kindle. It is a book not for prudes (a great deal of value!)

Not as violent or descriptive as some have described it to be, I found myself on the couch with a cup of coffee, a danish, two cats in the yard, and a very enjoyable hour or so.

If your more purulent recreational tastes lean toward the quirky then give this a try. What have you got to lose? Like I said, "Its Free."

 "Blood and gore" 2009-06-29
By Speedreader (Bay Area, CA)
SerialI wish I had sampled this book first! It is so full of blood and gore that I could not read it...and now it is in my archives FOREVER. I enjoy a good mystery, an exciting thriller and look forward to the story that makes me shiver, but this one is just too, too disturbing. As another reviewer so wisely points out, just because it's free doesn't mean you should "buy" it.

The true threat lies within the heart... Kate McAuley once thought Lucas Barone loved her, and returned that love for all she was worth-until the day he walked away without a word. Now, four years later she answers a knock on her door and finds Luke on her doorstep, broken, bleeding and unconscious. He brings with him all kind of emotions, and all kinds of questions. Where has he been? Why did he leave? And what's an accountant doing with wounds like these?

As a covert ops specialist with the U.S. government, Luke deceived, betrayed and conned so many people he couldn't keep them straight-except Kate. Their time together was magical, until the call came and he was forced to walk away. For four long years, memories of her have kept him alive and sane. Now, hunted by his own government, desperate and injured, Kate is the only one he can trust.

Kate's innocent phone call for help sets in motion an evil that reaches the highest echelons of political power. With accusations of murder and treason hanging over their heads, it'll take every ounce of Luke's training, intelligence-and Kate's trust-to keep them alive.

Warning: Deep emotion, edge of your seat suspense

 "I give it a 3.5 stars (bumped to for 4)" 2009-06-21
By Stanley Darwin
It all began when Lucas Barone walked out on his then girlfriend, Kate McAuley. Without an explanation, it appeared as though he just disappeared off the ace of the earth...that is, until one day, a knock on Kate's door. Lucas returns, but he is bleeding and nearly unconscious - what is Kate to do? This man broke her heart, but she can't just turn her back on him - but Lucas comes with baggage. As a co-op special forces agent, he has some very powerful enemies that want to see him (and Kate) dead - but why? The pair decide to hit the road trying to elude what almost seems inevitable. I'll stop there, as I don't want to spoil the story. The story is good and the characters are convincing, but the book does lose momentum once Lucas and Kate reach their safe haven. At this point all the suspense seems manufactured and the story tries to pass off some rather unconvincing excuses for what is happening. Deception by Sharon Cullen isn't a bad story, it just needs to pick a genre and stick with it. The book starts as a very intriguing suspense, but then it unexpectedly shifts toward a rather unconvincing romance...and when it tries to revert back toward suspense, it fails. Overall, I give it a 3.5 stars (bumped to for 4) If you want a reading experience that masters the two genre formula I'd highly recommend reading Geo Tin's novel Sirens: Sirens if you are one of the few who missed it.

 "Entertaining" 2009-06-20

Not bad for a freebie. Good character development. I felt for Kate and Luke as a couple but thought the plot re their arch nemisis could have used a little more work.

Trashy, dime store novel. Errors in verb and pronoun usage. Waste of time reading this.

 "Romance/Suspense - not bad" 2009-06-18
By Shania (Ohio)
I downloaded this book on my Kindle because it was free. It's not my usual genre, but it was actually a decent read. Romance with suspense and a pretty decent plot. The uncovering of the "villians" motivation/crimes should have been developed a bit more. I think 3.75 stars would probably be a better rating. I liked it enough that I would check out the author's next books when I'm in the mood for a similar type book. I'll bet she gets better with time and experience.
